Sunday 1st March 2015 – Travelling and walk on Loire - cloudy
We had a very long lie in and only really got on the move just before
lunchtime!! We didn’t get out to walk more at Cuffy because it was
raining and no exercises today:( We travelled down towards Macon and
stopped at Digoin which we had noticed on the way down at Christmas as
being further along the canal to Decize where we had stopped for lunch.
Digoin was ok but the dog pooh was pants!! They also have an aquaduct over
the Loire and we walked over it and back along a nature walk along the
Loire bank, over the road bridge and back for lunch at the van. Back on
the road we stopped at McDonalds in Macon for wifi and coffee:)
Monday 2 March 2015 – Travel- cloudy rain and sleet
We didn’t have a very good night as it was raining very heavily and also
dripping from the trees onto the van!! Got up to clearing skies and after
stand up exercises Mag actually managed to walk up to the waterfall she
has been wanting to walk to for ages:) No Chamoix this time but the
waterfall was torrential with all that rain! We left about 11 and after a
visit to two Lidl’s to stock up (the first one didn’t have a bakery!)
we drove to Menthiere. Disappointment here there was snow but it wasn’t
open! (we learnt later that it only opens at weekends and on Wednesdays!).
After lunch and a read we drove to Lelex which is about 12 miles further
along the road. It is a lot bigger resort and there were a lot of people
about because the kids are on holiday. We had a walk up to the Tourist
Information when it stopped hailing/raining/sleeting! Had a chat with a
nice lady about the walks and what the weather is going to be like for the
rest of the week (not very special unfortunately but today is supposed to
be the worst so improving). We did think about staying in Lelex but as it
was only about 4 we drove a bit further up the same road to Mijoux which
was more our cup of tea as it is smaller and quieter. Parked up near the
chair lift and have several options for things to do depending on the
weather. So compared to last year I think we are a bit disappointed but we
haven’t actually done anything yet so need to get out with our snow shoes
or skis!!
Tuesday 3rd March 2015- ski ***** Mijoux – sunny
That’s more like it – a glorious day:) A few clouds but nothing
ominous so our minds were made up and we flew around getting ready –
always a bit of a hassle on the first outing as we have to get all the ski
gear out of the top box and boot. Once it is out for the first time it all
seems a lot easier! We walked the 10 metres to the piste ready to ski down
to Mijoux and the tourist information office (where you have to get the
lift passes) and discovered that Mag’s blade bindings were the wrong size
for her boots! This must have been when we had them waxed at the end of
the Christmas holiday. It wasn’t a problem in the end as you can just
slide them to the right size without needing a screwdriver or a ski shop:)
So down to get our passes which were 57 euros for the two of us with
insurance and a pass card deposit. Then back up to the Val Mijoux lift
which takes you to La Faucille for a good selection of pistes. The best
thing was the amazing view as you got to the top of the 6 man Telecombi du
Mont Rond lift – over lake Leman and Geneva to the mountains beyond –
we could even see the famous Geneva fountain – it was stunning and such a
clear day too We went over to the view point which was at the Mont
Rond (1533m) and had a good look before starting off. Our favourite run
was Grand Tetraz which was a really wide blue with just the right slope to
make a good fast run without being to taxing:) Mag loved it – her
absolute favourite kind of skiing. There were several good reds and
another good blue called Gelinottes which took you over to the furthest
lift which was a really long drag lift. We came back down the steep path
and red run to the van for lunch and a rest before heading back for another
couple of hours to finish off the day. We certainly made the most of it as
we didn’t get back to the van until 5 when all the lifts shut. We had a
well deserved cuppa while watching the kids screeching to a halt next to
their parents who had to come to collect them and were waiting in the car
park. We decided to walk down the piste and road into the village and
bought some post cards. On the way back we past two quite elderly skiers
strapping on their skis to walk up the red piste! It was only 10 minutes
until it was dark so goodness knows where they were going – we didn’t
see them come back! We had salmon in foil for tea and just as we dished up
there was activity on the slope and 16 burning torches were stuck into the
piste for kids (and grown ups) to sledge down the piste in the dark! There
is a really bright full moon tonight and apart from the sledging which was
soon over, it is absolutely silent:)
